Primary Treatment

The VTC (CVF SERIES) removes hydrocarbons and settleable solids from industrial wastewater and coolant.

In operation, this separator accepts industrial liquid waste in the inlet chamber. Here settleable solids fall to the bottom as sludge for periodic removal.

Then the waste stream enters the coalescing separation chamber. A matrix of vertically-postioned polypropylene tubes gives laminar flow characteristics to the liquid. The result is a liquid more responsive to gravity separation.

Oleophilic in nature, they attract small oil globules which coalesce with other globules, increase in size and buoyancy, then break away to rise through the tubes to the top. Surface oil drains by gravity into a rotary pipe skimmer for discharge to a storage facility.

Performance that can be expected of the VTC(CVF SERIES) separator is:

  1. Removal of oil globules down to 20-micron size
  2. Reduction of oil content to 10mg/ltr

The VTC (CVF SERIES) removes even non-permanent mechanically emulsified oil. It leaves no visible sheen and traps solids too. In metalworking and similar applications, it removes more than 99% of tramp oils from coolants.

The VTC (CVF SERIES) incorporates a molded fiberglass construction. Internally reinforced, the structure withstands severe soil and hydraulic loadings.

The entire exterior surface is covered with corrosion-resistant gelcoat, integrally-colored and ultra-violet resistant. Since the envelope and fittings are corrosion-resistant, the separator can be installed in many hostile environments. No sacrificial protection required.

  1. Start up – Unit is primed with clean water.Unit is now ready for operation.
  2. Industrial waste water enters the inlet and is dispersed thru two adjustable diffusers. Large oil droplets float to the surface, solids drop to the bottom and the small oil droplets attach to the coalescing tube bundles. When additional small oil droplets collide with previously attached droplets they form a larger more buoyant droplets and rise to the surface.
  3. Processed water flows under the oil retention baffle and over the final weir wall.
  4. Only the cleanest water exits the unit thru the bottom of the outlet tee pipe.
  5. Surface oil is periodically skimmed from the unit by manually rotating the slotted rotary pipe skimmer.
  6. Unit is designed for continuous operation.

Application Uses

Standard 4 inch diameterLarge, unpredictable oil spills can defeat the most conservatively designed pollution control system. But while the cost of such a system can be prohibitive, the consequences of not controlling a spill can be equally catastrophic. The AFL/Clark Oil Stop Valve (OSV) is designed to solve these problems.

Oil Stop Valves confine even large oil spills to the premises. The OSV is available from AFL prepackaged in a fiberglass or steel catch basin or as an option on AFL oil/water separators. In addition, the OSV is available separately for installation in existing separators, catch basins or manholes.

The OSV has only one moving part, a ballasted float set at a specfic gravity between that of oil and water. When an oil spill occurs, the float loses buoyancy as the oil level increases until it finally seats itself on the discharge port. Thus, the oil spill is confined.

The Oil Stop Valve is fabricated from non-corrosive PVC and stainless steel. Standard sizes are 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″ discharge piping. Larger piping systems can be accommodated by manifolding units together. Optional screening can be provided if necessary to prevent the dicharge of large floating solids.

Consider the OSV for those applications where oil spills are possible, but unpredictable such as electrical transformers, oil storage areas, and transportation fueling systems. The Oil Stop Valve is the most cost effective method to prevent a major disaster.

Application Uses

AFL has developed coalescing media to upgrade existing gravity separators used in treating oily wastewater. The principal function of the pack is to provide a coalescing surface on which minute oil globules can agglomerate. The coalesced oil then rises to the surface to be skimmed.

Coalescing media makes possible the attainment of one of two goals-or a compromise between them:

  1. The oil content of the water can be significantly reduced, or
  2. The flow through the separator can be greatly increased without degradation of the oil-separating performance.

The vertically-postioned tubes, made of polypropylene, have oleophilic (oil-attracting) properties. Small, suspended particles of oil agglomerate on the stranded surface of the tube waiting for more oil to increase their size as well as buoyancy. Once sufficiently large they break free from the tube and rise quickly to the surface thru it’s center.

The media provides up to five times more coalescing surface than a plate pack. The extra surface gives oil globules more area on which to collect.

The vertical orientation of the tubes contributes to a more efficient separation. In a plate pack the rising oil must move against the flow of the influent. With a tube pack, however, the oil is free to travel a clear upward path to the surface.

The tubes remove oil globules down to the 20-micron range; this contrasts with the removal of 150 micron globules by gravity separators constructed on API dimensional criteria. In AFL coalescing separators the tubes typically produce effluents with an oil content of less than 10 mg/ltr.
